The Palouse Scenic Byway
meanders through the steep, rolling hills of Whitman County, in the southeastern
corner of the state. The unique geography of the hills defines the Palouse
Region, which was named after the Palouse Indians. Roads in the Palouse are
relics of Indian trails, wagon roads, and railroads, and were the original
connection between the region’s farms, towns, and landmarks. The gentle
beauty of the rhythmic hills conceals many remnants of this historic rural
landscape: lush timbered canyons teeming with wildlife, meandering streams.
prosperous farms, and the historic structures of the byway communities. The
first "hub-n-spoke” Scenic Byway. Designated 4-17-2003.
Rosalia is proud to be designated the "Gateway to the Palouse" and the starting point of this byway.
